Consumerism & Medicine: A Cultural Form to Ask and to Question
Mission Statement: Discoveries of the human body are being published in newspapers,
journals, and in the global media constantly. These new discoveries of the body occur
alongside with and indeed coincide with the technologies that help maintain and enhance our
bodies. The United States is a consumerist culture that embraces and in reality assumes that
every technological advance is beneficial and good for society and as a result is often blind to
the effect that consumerism has on technology and on our definition of the human body and
its happiness. This website is intended neither to congratulate nor shun such technological
advances and changing definitions what it means to fulfill human happiness. Rather, it is an
opportunity for us to step back and question the role medicine and consumerism together play
in our lives, and actively participate in the formation of the new interwined generation of
medicine and consumer culture with diverse and well-versed ideas.
