The Black Student Union at the University of Puget Sound was founded in 1968 by three students, the original BSU had nine active members. Currently, the BSU has over 40 active members/ allies, which include Students, Faculty and Staff. The BSU has had a long history here at UPS, and is one of the campuses oldest clubs. BSU has been responsible for implementing and demanding many changes for the betterment of all students of color. The original Black Student Union was intent in empowering themselves socially and politically, and making sure Blacks and all other students had a nurturing environment to learn. The philosophy of BSU has been to help students strive for academic excellence, promote positive images of African Americans and help students become an integral part of a college community. That mission is still the same as it was back then. BSU acts as a collective voice and a vehicle for students to organize and be heard. BSU has gone up and down, some years stronger than others, but the constant has always been the need for the presence of the club on campus.
